Joan van Dyk is an independent, South African health journalist. She graduated at the top of her journalism honours class at the University of Stellenbosch in 2017, and then moved to Johannesburg to start her career at the Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism. She spent just over six years at the Centre where she honed her news, analysis and narrative feature writing skills. Joan was part of the Bhekisisa team whose COVID-19 pandemic coverage earned the Centre the 2021 Reconciliation award from the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation.
At the African Alliance, Joan is in charge of amplifying the unique activist voice for which the Alliance has become known, whether through opinion pieces, feature articles or social media campaigns.Keep an eye on publications such as Daily Maverick and The Guardian for her reporting on development topics including climate change, tobacco industry tactics and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
